- Divorce
- Divorce ends a marriage under the Divorce Act (Canada). The Court of King's Bench of Alberta grants it once the marriage has broken down.
- Parenting and child custody
- Parenting arrangements address time with the child and major decisions. Both the Court of King's Bench of Alberta and the Alberta Court of Justice hear Family Law Act matters; Divorce Act orders are made in the Court of King's Bench.
- Child support
- Child support contributes to a child's living costs. The basic table amount depends on the applicable guideline tables, the number of children, and the paying parent's province and income.
- Spousal or partner support
- Spousal support is paid by one former spouse to the other where entitlement is shown. Partner support is claimed under the Family Law Act (Alberta) by an adult interdependent partner, a status defined by the Adult Interdependent Relationships Act.
- Family property division
- Alberta's Family Property Act deals with property between married spouses and adult interdependent partners. Different categories receive different treatment, including exempt value.
- Family agreements
- THEBIL Law prepares and reviews prenuptial, postnuptial, cohabitation and separation agreements and provides independent legal advice. Ask about the terms and requirements relevant to your agreement.
