Consultations at THEBIL Law are paid. The office confirms the charge before the meeting, and payment is made in advance. Send a consultation request to arrange a meeting.
How a Consultation Is Arranged

THEBIL Law accepts Legal Aid Alberta certificates, particularly Child Counsel files. Whether you qualify for legal aid, and what it covers, is decided by Legal Aid Alberta.

What Can Affect the Legal Work
The legal work can depend on the issues, the records and the route the matter takes:
- Which route the matter takes. A matter where the issues are settled is a different piece of work from one where they are not.
- How much is actually in dispute. A single unresolved question is a different exercise from a file where property, support and parenting are all open.
- How complete the records are. Information that has to be chased, reconstructed or requested more than once is work that records already to hand would not require.
- Whether something has to be valued. Income, a business interest or property may have to be valued before anyone can say what is being divided.
- Whether an expert is needed. Some questions are answered by an expert rather than from the parties' own documents.
- How much is resolved by agreement. An issue the parties settle between them is generally not one the court is asked to resolve.

Legal Aid and Free Legal Help in Alberta
Alberta has public legal help that does not depend on any law firm. What follows is public information, with the date each source was read.
Legal Aid Alberta. It helps with family matters including parenting, guardianship, child support, property actions, spousal support and divorce. To qualify you must be a resident of Alberta, or a resident of Canada with a court case in Alberta, and you must meet its financial guidelines. Legal Aid Alberta looks at income over both the last 30 days and the last 12 months, and both have to meet the guidelines.
Legal Aid Alberta's assessment guidelines below were read on September 21, 2026. Figures are net income, not gross; both periods are assessed.

These are assessment guidelines, not a cutoff. Legal Aid Alberta states that exceptions, deductions and considerations form part of the formal financial assessment it carries out, so whether a particular person qualifies is decided by Legal Aid Alberta and not by a table.
Where Legal Aid Alberta provides a lawyer, that representation is not free of charge. Legal Aid Alberta pays the lawyer during the case, and clients are expected to repay Legal Aid Alberta for those services, with no interest and no GST.
Calgary Legal Guidance. Volunteer lawyers give 30 to 45 minutes of free legal support on many family law issues, and the clinic also runs Do-Your-Own Divorce Clinics. Whether you are eligible depends on your income, and Calgary Legal Guidance states that it cannot help you if you qualify for Legal Aid or Student Legal Assistance unless your issue is one those agencies cannot take. Its number is 403-234-9266.
Student Legal Assistance. A pro bono clinic providing legal information and representation to low-income residents of Calgary and the surrounding area, with family among the areas it covers.
Duty counsel. Legal Aid Alberta states that duty counsel can assist on your court date in certain locations across Alberta, including Calgary.
Two Government of Alberta programs. The Child Support Recalculation Program can update the amount of child support a parent pays based on their income, and needs an existing order or agreement. The Child Support Resolution Program helps parents reach an agreement about financial support and get a court order, and is available only in Edmonton and Calgary. Both are free government programs.
There are more services than these. The Centre for Public Legal Education Alberta publishes a directory of family law supports that can be filtered by what you need, where you live and which court you are in.
What the Court Charges
Court fees are separate from legal fees. The court's own charge for commencing a divorce claim is published by the Government of Alberta, and it is set out with its source and date on the divorce cost guide.
